Re: warped rotors ... why?

I did some digging and found out I have 02 GSXR1000 forks on my 01 GSXR750. I bought some used rotors; one has .006" runout and the other .008" runout. Neither rotor is at the min thickness. Ohh, they are off an 01 GSXR1000. I cannot see a difference between 750 and 1000 brake calipers or rotors. The rotors and front wheel are identical, so I will assume the caliper is also the same.

Here is my new isssue. I replaced the rotors and purchased new Gafler pads. When first spun the wheel by hand it maybe rotated halfway around before stopping, because the pads are dragging. I rode the bike 10 miles around town. i checked the rotors at one point and they were very hot, but I checked my rear rotor (which I never use the rear) and it was slightly warm. I put it back on stands and now when I spin the wheel it goes around 1 full revolution before stopping.

I assume all pads drag a little when not in use, but are my front pads dragging too much? The brakes work excellent, so there is no perfomance issue I just don't want to screw up the rotors by overheating.

Re: warped rotors ... why?

bike brake rotors are different than a car...in most cases the brake calipers give pressure but have no mechanism to push them back in place...so they always rub

Re: Warped Rotors ... Why?

Any heavy braking can warp your rotors, especially if you have cheap pads. And of course never drive through any water while on your brakes, but thats a given. I would recommend some better pads. Cheap pads can not diffuse heat as well as say nice ceramic ones. Does the bike have abs? cause if you lock up your wheel with out it. warped again

Re: Warped Rotors ... Why?

If you are just street riding then normal replacement pads are best . High end pads are harder and less prone to heating but the trade off is it takes a toll on your rotors by wearing them instead . You dont ride hard enough on the street to need racing pads . Waste of money IMHO . If your stunting you probably would want them but again hard on rotors . I have straightened rotors on a car by giving them a real hard brake application and then keep driving until they cool off and it will straighten them . Never tried it on a bike .
Wheelies will never warp rotors ( the front wheel is off the ground so how could it ??? )
My suggestion would be to remove the calipers and remove the pads . Extend the cylinders in the calipers by applying the front brake . Clean the cylinders with 1000 grit sand paper and oil . Make them super clean and shiny . Wipe some oil on the cylinders with your fingers and then shove them back into the caliper and put the pads back in and put them back on .
Personally i think the caliper cylinders are sticking and not returning away from the rotor . The vibration alone from very little runout should push the cylinders back in away from the rotors .
Just my 2 cents
