Warped Rotors ... Why?
I bought a 01 750 with 04 1000 forks. I don't know a lot about the bike, but the front rotors are warped up to .025 runout. There is slight vibration during braking, so I can deal with it for now.
My first question is how could this happen? The next question deals with the different years. The 01 750 and 04 1000 use the same front wheel (PN match), but the rotors between these two models have different PN's. Does anyone know if the rotors are offset differently, which would warp the rotors if I don't have the same model brake calipers?
thanks

i don't think the diffrent years of the rotors would cause that (not sure though). diffrent pn's don't really mean much. i just got an 01 fuel pump and gas tank to put on my 03 and have no prob's. they are diff pn's. rotors can warp for a number of reasons. i have seen cases where the rotors get hot and you go through water and develop a slight warp ect....

Indows can cause warp. You will lose you brakes some times cause of this. They will go in and out.. I have the same problem.. I am looking for new ones as we speek.

Re: warped rotors ... why?
the guy i bought the bike from was into stunting. I imagine quite a few stoppies. How can stoppies cause rotors to warp? I raced my old bike for two seasons and never had a problem with the stock rotors warping from high heat/stress.
I am worried that if I buy a new wheel/rotors or just rotors that they will warp immediately because of a different offset. What I really need to find out is the distance from one rotor to the other on a 04 GSXR1000 and see if it is the same for an 01 GSXR750. Anyone out there with some info?

Re: warped rotors ... why?
If its got
04 forks
o1 750 or 04 wheel-same pn as u say
what are the calipers as I would assume u need to match the caliper
o4 caliper 04 rotors
01 cailper 01 rotors
but the constant stress with him doing stoppies will warp the rotors easily
worn headstock bearings give the same symptoms so make sure they are ok

Re: warped rotors ... why?
Wheelies. For some reason people's bikes who do wheelies have warped rotors. That's about as scientific as it gets from me.

Re: warped rotors ... why?
If the brake pads are aftermarket they could also cause the rotors to warp. Some pads are going to eat away the rotors faster than the pads can wear.

Re: warped rotors ... why?
when doing a stoppie you can warp the rotors because of the heat stress and when you get the rotors really hot and then let off the brakes and they have time to cool then you will probley not warp them but if you do a stoppie and get the rotors hot and come to a complete stop the pressure from the calipers in one spot of a hot rotor will cause it to warp so if he was doing stoppies and coming to a complete stop that will cause it for sure

Re: warped rotors ... why?
if the offset is different more than likely the calipers will rub all the time so i would not think that you have an offset problem just a case of hot rotors

+1000000000 I know when when we hit it at night and I roll a long one to a red light, my rotors look like they are glowing in the dark... I mean bright red! and when you get to your stop... you hang up there for a minute or two in the same spot causing that one spot to continue to scorch while the rest of the rotor cools off.

Re: warped rotors ... why?
rotors take a lot of abuse before they warp but heat is like the worst enemy for just about anything

Re: warped rotors ... why?
Does anybody know for positive.. about floating rotors vrs. stock, and how much of a upgrade do larger diameter " waffel " rotors ,and/or racing pads for the street.? If you get larger diameter rotors can you space out factory calipers.? I to have one warped front , I let the original pad get to low..had about 11k of fairly hard ridding..and they still had about 65% left..I hope this is not a thread Jack..

Re: warped rotors ... why?
I had oversized floating rotors on an R1. The bike came that way, and yes there are adapters so you can use your stock calipers with oversized rotors. I think Braketech was the brand.

Re: warped rotors ... why?
The most recent blades have spacers on their calipers as standard, for what reason i dont know.(probably to save on sorting new discs out) But no problem with spacers/adapters to upgrade discs/calipers,as long as fitted properly and right size.

Re: warped rotors ... why?
I did some digging and found out I have 02 GSXR1000 forks on my 01 GSXR750. I bought some used rotors; one has .006" runout and the other .008" runout. Neither rotor is at the min thickness. Ohh, they are off an 01 GSXR1000. I cannot see a difference between 750 and 1000 brake calipers or rotors. The rotors and front wheel are identical, so I will assume the caliper is also the same.
Here is my new isssue. I replaced the rotors and purchased new Gafler pads. When first spun the wheel by hand it maybe rotated halfway around before stopping, because the pads are dragging. I rode the bike 10 miles around town. i checked the rotors at one point and they were very hot, but I checked my rear rotor (which I never use the rear) and it was slightly warm. I put it back on stands and now when I spin the wheel it goes around 1 full revolution before stopping.
I assume all pads drag a little when not in use, but are my front pads dragging too much? The brakes work excellent, so there is no perfomance issue I just don't want to screw up the rotors by overheating.
