This is a little 10 episode mini-series on HBO that follows the Marines of 1st Marine Division through their battles from Guadalcanal to Okinawa in WWII. It's made by the same people (Steven Speildberg and Tom Hanks) who made Band of Brothers.
It's airs on Sundays at 9PM on HBO. If you don't have HBO you can watch it on their website but you have to register....

The Pacific is awesome. Action right off the bat with a little backstory to the characters. I look forward to the next episode. The series sorta follows the exploits of Medal of Honor recepient John Basilone and the the Marine Corp's most highly decorated Marine Chesty Puller.
As for the HBO thing... I'm only subscribing until the 10 episodes are finished... do it'll only be for three months.
