Hunting Rifles

So I went to the range today to blow off some steam between my ex, the water heater, and school. But I managed to get even more pissed off because all three of my weapons malfunctioned/broke.

I have a Remington 770 .270, Remington 597 .22LR and a Mossberg Mavrick 12ga. Today was the first time I have fired any of the weapons and was doing good. I was apprehensive about the .22 cause it fell apart on me right out of the box I took it back to Dicks and they replaced it because it was never fired.
Well I sighted in the .22 @ 25yds with no problem. I moved over to the 100yd line and began firing my .270 about 40 rounds later I unlock the bolt to chamber another round and the entire bolt comes out of the weapon. Im mad I inspect it and find that the bolt lock has somehow been worn down. I proceed to fire my .22 and sight in at 100yds. I get a dud round so I try to cycle the action and the bolt only opens half way. I look in the chamber and see the same little "L" clip that fell out last time sitting between a round and the magazine. And sure enough when I pull out the magazine the same little pin from last time falls out. No idea what its to, how it works or what. But damn.
So I pack up my rifles and call remington, dude on the phone doesnt believe the same thing happened to two different rifles. But he gave me the number to the nearest authroized shop in Austin 60 miles away. So I know what Im doing tomorrow.

Oh and now Im really mad so I grab my mossberg and a case of shells and try to let off some steam. But no I cant pump the shotgun after the first shot and have to muscle the pump to the rear. And every time for the last shell I have to rise the gun to get it to chamber. But I kinda expected choppy performance from a $150 shotgun, so I cant really say I was mad. I did however go through 25 shells in under a minute.

Ok, Im done, I've vented. Now to ask about motorcycles.

Oh has anyone else own these models and ever had problems? I realize they are all entry level hunting rifles/shotgun, But still, 2 weapons from remington. What kinda rifles should I look at when I need to replace these?

Re: Hunting Rifles

I have only Reminton long guns and some random .22 rifles. I shoot a Remington 700 BDL .300 Win Mag., Remington 870 express magnum 12 gauge. and some .22 plinkers. I have never had any trouble with the Remington's I have. But I don't buy bottom of the line weapons. There is too much at stake to use weapons that are not at least mediocre. You pay 150 for a shotgun, you should expect it to blow up in your face. Just my .02.

Re: Hunting Rifles

How'd I know you were gonna be the one to answer this.
I expected the poor pefrormance from the shotgun it was only $150, but the two remingtons? I expect a remington to function like a remington wether its a base model or a competition rifle.

Re: Hunting Rifles

Well, c'mon, I am a gun freak.

I have to agree with you on the Remington's. They should be good rifles, no matter the price. I have personally never had any problems with my Remingtons.

There are lots of forums for rifles. I would check those to see if that particular model has had any recalls or widespread issues. Make sure you tell the gunsmith that this is the second rifle you have had that was screwed up.

I bought my daughter a savage Mark 7, and my youngest daughter a cricket. Both in .22

My favorite .22 had to be the Ruger 10/22. 30 rnd mags and too many accessories. You can make those things into anything you want. A bullpup, AR-15 style, a freakin' gatlin gun if'n you want. But the basic Ruger 10/22 is one of the best .22's you can get.

I once saw a friend of mine get a bolt in the face because of crappy reloaded ammo, but have never been involved with a Remington malfunctioning.

Good luck with it, and get rid of that shotgun. Go to Wal-Mart and spend the $290.00 for the Remington 870 express. I have the synthetic stocks on mine, as I do with all my long guns, and I am very happy with it. Of course, all my firearms are cleaned after every field day. I musta learned that in the military I guess.

You get what you pay for....On that note, while with my old department and doing some cross training with another SWAT team, I saw a MP-5 explode while the operator was doing entry training....stitches to the cheek.....

Re: Hunting Rifles

Stuff can happen with any weapon system. We have people who are not qualified working on side arms and can't figure out why they are having malufunctions. There is even a powerpoint on doing trigger work on the S&W M&P yourself. "No gunsmith experience needed", yea right. Then we wonder why they explode. I am the Chief Firearms Instructor for my division at my S.O. and I see people who want "trigger work" done all the time. makes me crazy.

Re: Hunting Rifles

The only cheap rifle i would recommend would be the stevens 200 made by savage the only real difference between the 200 and model savage model 10 (i think) is the 200 is synthetic stock and no accutrigger.
